- Keep a question-to-evidence matrix and institutional delivery checklist with the thesis.
This section covers in depth the content of each thesis chapter, formatting standards, and defense advice.
Front matter and formatting requirements
Title page, dedication, acknowledgements, abstract in local and English language, table of contents, list of figures and tables. Guidance on fonts, spacing and formal layout rules.
Chapter 1 — Introduction and problem definition
A strong introduction including background, significance, aims, scope and thesis structure.
Chapter 2 — Literature review and theoretical framework
Develop a conceptual model, synthesize previous findings and draw a research map. How to organize the review and proper referencing.
Chapter 3 — Methods
Detailed explanation of population and sample, measurement tools, validity and reliability checks, and analysis software.
Chapter 4 — Results
Present results with tables, charts and statistical summaries. Tips for reporting results without excessive interpretation.
Chapter 5 — Discussion and conclusion
Interpret results, compare with literature, list limitations, practical implications and recommendations for future research.
Appendices and supplementary data
Include code, raw tables and questionnaire forms to ensure reproducibility.
Defense tips
- Prepare a concise presentation within the institution’s allotted defense time
- Be ready to answer common questions (methods, limitations, rationale for choices)
- Summarize the novelty and contributions clearly
Coherence and defense preparation
Chapter organization depends on institutional rules and discipline; a fixed chapter count is not universal. Link each result to a question or hypothesis. Practice explaining your main claim, evidence, limitations and choice of methods. Match presentation length to the defense rules.
- Align questions, variables, methods and findings
- Separate results from interpretation and prior-study comparisons
- Track supervisor feedback and responses to each revision
- Back up manuscripts, data, code and defense slides
Make the doctoral contribution reviewable
A contribution may concern questions, data, methods, theory or application. Changing the location or population name alone may not provide sufficient novelty. Write a paragraph connecting prior evidence, its limitations and your specific contribution. Keep that statement consistent across introduction, methods and discussion.
Revision log and final files
Track each supervisor comment, its location, your action and any reason for not implementing it. Check table numbers, citations, units, figure titles, abstracts and contents before submission. Inspect the exported PDF separately: a correct Word file does not ensure correct PDF pagination.
Practice defense questions
- Why does this problem matter and what is your contribution?
- Which assumptions limit the analysis?
- Which findings agree or disagree with earlier evidence?
- What would you change with additional resources?
Worked case and implementation decisions
The following is a fictional teaching case. Do not use its numbers or wording as actual study findings.
A fictional thesis results chapter should do more than paste software output. Map each question to its method, evidence and a bounded answer. For observational academic-support data, “was associated with a higher score” is more defensible than “caused improvement.” Reproduce the main table from versioned data and code, then discuss what was not measured. Chapter structure, abstract requirements and defense format come from the institution; this example sets neither a universal chapter count nor a defense duration.
| Stage | Teaching example | Verification question |
|---|---|---|
| Question | Is support use associated with participation? | Does it match the proposal? |
| Method | Observational model and measurement limits | Are new decisions dated? |
| Evidence | Reproducible table from a fixed version | Do text and table agree? |
| Discussion | Alternatives and generality bounds | Is interpretation within evidence? |
| Delivery | Text, code, appendices and defense notes | Are institutional requirements covered? |
Exercise output: Keep a question-to-evidence matrix and institutional delivery checklist with the thesis.
